Describing the life of an artist is a very complicated process. This is because there is usually a lot of ups and downs that an artist has to go through in his/her career. Deciding to become an artist is not the biggest decision an artist has to take. Sticking to that decision is the most difficult part. Theoretically, being an artist is as easy as pursuing any other career. You realize that you want to be an artist, enroll in a course that lets you learn the basics of the art you want to pursue, get your bachelor’s degree and sometimes a master’s degree. Then come the internship and you start working under other bigger artists. You learn and make your own portfolio, get a job and make a successful career in the arts.
However, the reality is not that simple. Not only as an artist but in any career field there is usually a lot of competition and you need to always stay ahead of the game. The problem with being an artist is that you cannot stop and take a break. Because that will cause extreme losses to your career. There are usually 10 people behind you ready to take your place, some even more talented than you. All they lack is your experience.
You, therefore, need to constantly keep creating, and that process cannot stop. Not if you are serious, that is. Monotonous work can stifle an artist’s creativity. So, here are a few things that you should definitely do as an artist to cope with failures and assure your eventual success.
The very first thing any artist needs to be is confident about his or her work. The confidence also needs to show up in your work. Confident people are always preferred because they know what they are doing and what they are worth. There are always going to be people better than you and that is an obvious fact. The key is that you must realize that you have something unique. Polishing that unique factor is going to help you succeed as an artist. Artists are needed all over the world for numerous reasons. So, you should know that if you are good at something you will eventually get successful at it.
Never Be Negative
Never be negative and never talk negatively about your own work or art. Being negative about your profession is tantamount to betraying your own choices. No matter how bad times are be assured that there are always opportunities coming your way. The biggest struggle with being an artist is to keep working and struggling even if you do not see any results. This hard work does pay off and before you know it you are successful.
Do not try to copy others. It is ok to be inspired by someone you admire, but slavishly copying them is not an option. The world already has an artist like them, you need to come up with your own unique style. Being unique is the key to success. People do not want to see the same thing done over and over again. They rather desire variety and you should be able to bring that variety to your work. Also, one-of-a-kind artists are usually preferred by employers for their projects, more often than others that blindly follow the bandwagon.
Be Careful with your Choices
Never work for free or at a place that steals your identity. This means that at some point people trick artists into working for them, steal their work and then place it under their own name. This is the worst thing that can happen to an artist. Before signing up for any work check the legal paperwork and ask for advance payments for your work. Also, do a background check on the people you are working with.
Have clear basic knowledge
Always have clearly understood basics and fundamentals knowledge of your art form. It has been constantly repeated here that having clear fundamentals is very important and for good reason. If you lack the foundation, you cannot succeed as an artist. Before drawing a scenery you need to learn how to sketch. So, keep brushing up on your fundamentals every now and then.
Art is something that is constantly evolving and growing so it is very important to evolve and grow along with it. This is a regular process that you need to follow. Keep learning and that will help you keep progressing. Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, so, you need to keep up with it.
Don’t be Proud
One of the biggest mistakes artists usually make is to become proud of the work they are doing. And along with that pride, they keep forgetting their roots. As an artist, you should keep in mind that there is always a better artist present somewhere in the world and one mistake will make him/her take your place. So, if you are becoming successful, stay humble and never stop working harder.
Making social contacts is another thing that is very important as an artist. You need to be friendly with the people around you as anyone you meet might be a potential employer. Also, being social makes you popular and cause increasing numbers of people to appreciate your work.
